Concert Ensembles (Classes)
Wind Ensemble:
The Wind Ensemble meets daily during the school day. This ensemble is a collection of the most advanced band students at Sumter High School. This ensemble performs grade 4-6 music. All members must undergo an audition before being placed in this ensemble. Wind Ensemble students are expected to participate in SCBDA events such as region band, concert performance assessment, and solo/ensemble events. The Wind Ensemble also performs at seasonal school concerts and graduation.
Symphonic Band:
The Symphonic Band meets daily during the school day. This is the intermediate level band of Sumter High School. This ensemble performs grade 3-4 music. All members must undergo an audition before being placed in this ensemble. Symphonic Band students are expected to participate in SCBDA events such as region band, concert performance assessment, and solo/ensemble events. The Symphonic Band also performs at seasonal school concerts and graduation.
Concert Band:
The Concert Band meets daily during the school day. This ensemble is made of primarily freshman and sophomore band students. This ensemble performs grade 2-3 music. All members must undergo an audition before being placed in this ensemble. Concert Band students are expected to participate in SCBDA events such as region band, concert performance assessment, and solo/ensemble events. The Concert Band also performs at seasonal school concerts and graduation.
Indoor Percussion Ensemble
Marching Band
The Marching Band rehearses and performs exclusively after school. The season begins in July (end of month) and finishes in December (Sumter Christmas Parade). This ensemble performs at football games, community parades and competes at four annual marching band competitions. The Sumter Marching Band is composed of wind players, front ensemble percussion, battery (marching) percussion, and color guard members. Students interested in color guard or percussion will need to audition for an appropriate placement. Auditions and music camp for all members will take place in May of the preceeding year.
Marching Band experience is not required!!!
Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble rehearses and performs exclusively after school. The season begins with auditions in November and ends in May. The Jazz Ensemble attends two annual Jazz Festivals that allow the members to recieve performance scores and work with professional jazz musicians. The Sumter Jazz Ensemble will also perform for seasonal concerts and various communinity events such as: The Black Cowboy Festival, Iris Festival, Festival on the Avenue, and Award Banquets. Members will be exposed to various styles of Jazz such as: New Orleans, Swing, Bebop, Shuffle, Funk, Latin, and many more!
Jazz experience is not required!!!
The Indoor Percussion Ensemble rehearses and performs exclusively after school. The season begins with auditions in November and ends in April. The Indoor Percussion Ensemble performs at three to four competitions annually within the Southeastern states. Interested students will be auditioned so that they are appropriately placed on each instrument.
Percussion experience is not required!!!
